In the interests of sparking discussion, I thought I'd pass on this interesting article in Christianity Today. Enjoy and, more to the point, comment! I'm reserving my comments for when the discussion gets going. www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2010/september/2.36.htmlPeace, Phil

The junior editor said no one know who Aun Rand is? This must be a generational or even educational thing. I read her major opus "Atlas Shrugged" years ago, and it was an entertaining book to read, but she certainly has many axes to grind. She was profoundly anti-religious, at least in a standard Christian or Jewish sense-she term of contempent for religious was "mystics"
From what I've gathered from her writings she was a proponent of pure unregulated capitalism; helping out the poor was alright as long as such help was in no way compulsory. Strictly dog eat dog, survival of the fitest type of stuff, which I find chilling, the flip side of complete socialism.

As an antidote to Ayn Rand try the recent pronouncements of Ann Rice.

I think the Ayn Rand thing is a bit generational, although I would note that one of my ex-students (in her early 20s) had a friend suggest Ayn Rand. I don't think she took up the suggestion, but she is still circulating.
I confess I never read Rand at all, largely because I was put off by the type of person who was enthustiastic about her. Perhaps not a good reason, but it was an intuition which I think was a correct one; that is, I didn't want to grow into the kind of selfishness that Ayn Rand engendered in her avid fan base. And that was before I was a Christian.
