The 39 Articles are an official formulary of the Anglican Church in most provinces, except for The Episcopal Church. Clergy must subscribe to them at their ordination. In some provinces they must read the 39 Articles to the congregation in place of a sermon at their induction into a new ministry. The 39 Articles pronounce an anathema or curse once and only once. This anathema is found in the 18th Article. The 18th Article reads as follows:
"They also are to be had accursed that presume to say, That every man shall be saved by the Law or Sect which he professeth, so that he be diligent to frame his life according to that Law, and the light of Nature. For Holy Scripture doth set out unto us only the Name of Jesus Christ, whereby men must be saved."
If one accepts the doctrine and principles set forth in the 39 Articles, then The Episcopal Church's new Presiding Bishop is anathema.
The 2006 General Convention refused to consider a resolution that would have affirmed the core Christian doctrine of no salvation but by Jesus Christ. It was argued that the resolution was unnecessary because The Episcopal Church already affirmed this doctrine in its Consistution and Canons. In this way way the 2006 General Convention sought to dodge what might have proven a very embarrassing vote. The previous General Convention had failed to pass a resolution that affirmed the central tenets of the Christian faith. The 2006 General Convention did, however, elect a new Presiding Bishop who among her first public pronouncements declared that Jesus Christ is not the only way to God, repudiating the doctrine. In making this declaration the new Presiding Bishop not only made herself anathema in the eyes of those Anglicans who accept the doctrine and principles of the 39 Articles but also made anathema the 2006 General Convention, the body that elected her.
The New Testament warns us that anyone who goes beyond Christ's teaching is a false teacher and anyone who welcomes a false teacher shares his wicked work (2 John 9-11). Christ himself claimed that the only way to the Father was through the Son (Luke 10:22, John 6:40 John 14:16). The 2006 General Convention not only has put itself in a difficult position, electing a new Presiding Bishop whose theological views are far from biblically orthodox or Anglican, but also has put the other primates and bishops of the Anglican Communion in a similar position. If they welcome the new Presiding Bishop to the councils of the Anglican Church, they themselves will become participants in the evil works of a false teacher and they themselves, like Jefferts Schori, will become anathema.
The next few months should prove "interesting" to say the least!!
