Can I be rebaptized and reconfirmed?

Hi everyone. I do not feel that my original baptism and confirmation were valid for various reasons. Would the Episcopal Church rebaptize and reconfirm me?

Sometimes, yes; depending on the circumstances. From the Book of Common Prayer, pg. 313:

If there is reasonable doubt that a person has been baptized with water, "In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (which are the essential parts of Baptism), the person is baptized in the usual manner, but this form of words is used

If you are not already baptized, N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

You would need to talk to your priest to regarding your particular case. Hope this helps.

If you were baptized with water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you're been validly baptized, and if you've been confirmed by either a Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox bishop, you've been validly confirmed. Not to sound snarky or anything, but our own personal feelings don't matter when it comes to this sort of thing. You could have been confirmed by a bishop who's secretly a satanist, kicks puppies, and sleeps with prostitutes, but your confirmation would still be valid, since the minister is only a vessel for God's grace, and the validity of the sacraments doesn't depend on the moral character of the minister.

Well, that wasn't my reason for wanting to get rebaptized and reconfirmed. The reason is because my motives weren't correct at the time of my baptism and I had mortal sin on my conscience at the time of confirmation. I'm not sure if you all believe in mortal sin or not. But anyway, I talked to my priest about it and he said he is fine with me getting rebaptized and reconfirmed.

Swick is right here. If you've been a Roman Catholic, I suspect that you've had a valid baptism and confirmation (i.e. in the name of the Trinity). It is not the accepted position in the Anglican/Episcopal Church to rebaptize in these situations.

That means that a Reception ceremony is the most appropriate to you. It is similar to a confirmation, but without the laying on of hands. It recognizes the baptism/confirmation of your previous background, but welcomes you to membership in the Anglican Church. It really is the most appropriate of ceremony for someone in your position.

Well, I will talk to my priest about simply getting a reception ceremony instead of a rebaptism and reconfirmation ceremony. I really would like to be rebaptised and reconfirmed though..

Why is that? Do you think the baptism and confirmation that you had in the Roman Catholic Church was invalid or wrongs somehow? One of the reason why the Anglican/Episcopal Church doesn't do it is that it sends precisely that signal.

From the way I read it, Holly was capable of making her baptismal covenant. Her statement "The reason is because my motives weren't correct at the time of my baptism and I had mortal sin on my conscience at the time of confirmation" implies that she holds a view of baptism that the reception of the sacraments depends on the "faith" of the recipient. Let me assure you that there are numerous Anglicans who hold that view of the sacraments and they haven't been burned yet for heresy.

Frankly, Holly, the relationship between Rome and Canterbury won't be lessened, the validity of our sacraments will remain intact, and the Church will still lumber along no matter what choice you and your priest make.

Yes, we do. If you were baptized w/water(sprinkled/poured/dunked/whatever) in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit/Ghost, then it counts. Unless you belonged to one of the non-Trinitarian "Jesus Only" churches, I think you're covered.

Correct. What I find really great about the EC is that any baptized Christian can participate in the Eucharist. Now, being that I am still Catholic and today was the first EC service I had ever attended, I withheld and did not go up today. Should I join the EC, and I feel very strong about it and actually feel fine about it in my soul, then yes, I cannot wait to share in the Lord's supper with my fellow Episcopalian brothers and sisters.
